I think that this poem takes place in the time of segragation and how African Americans had to over come their obstacles, and unify the races. My evidence for my first thought is when he says I loved all where positive in the event of my demise. What haven't I let go. Why do I hold on? Instead I'm damage like my rose. His mom was part of a club called the Black Panther Party which was an african American organization that promoted black power and self defense.
