The snakes won't do much damage, will distract the target from you and it will take a few precious seconds for your future pet to kill them all, leaving you enough time to finish the taming process. Comment by injunuity don't have an order hall companion with you when going to tame pets, they'll aggro like it's an attack, and break your attempt to do this.

I tested taming animals higher than me too since now I have to replace my pets: You can tame a beast that is up to two levels higher than you.
You can now tame beasts higher level than you, on some occasions. Due to the implementation of mob scaling mobs will now appear around your level in zones that aren't your level.
